IEEE Photonics Society Conference at the Hyatt Regency in Burlingame, CA

I find conference photography very interesting. I always walk away with a little more knowledge than what I walked in with. We were asked to photograph award recipients, cover some of the presentations and general photos of the conference at the IEEE Photonics Society 2012 Conference held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Burlingame.

I like most people like my various phones and other devices. I don’t know how they work and I’m always amazed at the new features that come out every year. When I came home from the conference I looked up photonics these are two definitions I found that helped me understand a little about what I heard:

1. a branch of physics that deals with the properties and applications of photons especially as a medium for transmitting information.

2. The science of generating and transmitting light (photons). It deals with light starting in the infrared range, through visible light to ultraviolet light at the highest frequency. Most photonic systems use electricity and electronic circuits as their source of energy.

I am still not sure what exactly the men and women and the conference do but I am sure we will like the new technologies that they are working on.

There was one thing I do want to pass on though, it is what was said by Eli Yablonovitch a professor with the Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences Department at the University of California, Berkeley, and director of the National Science Foundation’s Center for Energy Efficient Electronics Science. He was awarded The IEEE Photonics Award by the IEEE Board of Directors. The award is presented for outstanding achievements in photonics. After acknowledging others in his field whose work was also important and thanking them for the recognition, he said how important research was and how with resources for research were becoming scare. His concern was how these young engineers were going to be able to afford to do the research needed to keep the innovation of these new ideas and products going.
